Module 4 – Contamination & Risk

What this module covers
Modules 1 through 3 documented the case for care, the cleaning protocol, and the drying and maintenance standard. This module documents contamination — what it is, how it occurs, and the specific risks it creates for the patient prescribed botanical medicine.
Contamination is not a single event. It is a cumulative process. Every session that occurs without adequate cleaning adds to the contamination load. Every component that is not inspected before use is a potential contamination pathway. This module documents each pathway and the standard that closes it.
The protocol structure
- Before every session — pre-session checks and preparation standard
- During every session — in-session monitoring and response
- After every session — post-session clearance and wipe-down
- Scheduled maintenance — full strip-down cleaning at the documented frequency
Each stage is a non-negotiable part of the complete standard. Omitting any stage does not reduce the protocol — it breaks it.
Before every session
Hand hygiene
Wash and fully dry hands before handling the device, the CBPM, dosing capsules, or any accessory. Single-use nitrile gloves are appropriate where required.
Device checks
- Screen check: Both screens must be present, clean, and intact. If either is absent, damaged, or blocked — do not use the device.
- Seal and O-ring check: Any seal that is cracked, deformed, discoloured, or does not seat correctly must be replaced before use.
- Airpath check: Draw resistance must be consistent and moderate. Any significant increase indicates a blockage — clear it before use.
- Chamber check: The filling chamber must be clear of AVB and residue from the previous session before loading.
- Battery check: Confirm battery level before beginning. A device that runs out of power mid-session does not deliver the full prescribed dose.
Preparation checks
- Grinder (Herbing Mill) check: Confirm the grinder — referred to by Storz & Bickel as the Herbing Mill — is clean. If switching strains, confirm it has been cleaned to protocol standard since the last use with a different strain.
- Dosing capsule check: Confirm the capsule is clean, intact, and correctly identified for the strain being used.
- Accessory check: Filling chamber tool, filling funnel, and any accessory being used must be confirmed clean before use.
Loading
Grind the CBPM to a consistent medium grind using the grinder or Herbing Mill. Load into the dosing capsule or directly into the filling chamber using the filling chamber tool. Do not overpack. Insert the dosing capsule or close the filling chamber. Fit the cooling unit. Power on the device.
Temperature and ready signal
Allow a minimum of 90 seconds from power-on. Do not use the device before the vibration ready signal confirms it has reached the set temperature. Start at 180°C.
During every session
Draw technique
Inhale slowly and evenly. The Mighty Medic+ is engineered with a controlled, restricted draw — this is intentional. Do not attempt to draw faster than the device allows.
Temperature progression
- Start at 180°C.
- Increase to 195°C as vapour production reduces.
- Increase to 210°C — the manufacturer maximum. Hold until no visible vapour remains.
- Session is complete when no visible vapour remains, or a burnt popcorn taste indicates the material is exhausted.
In-session monitoring
- If draw resistance increases significantly — stop. Allow the device to cool. Inspect the screens and airpath before continuing.
- If the device produces an error code — stop. Consult the manufacturer documentation before continuing.
- If the device produces an unusual smell — stop. Allow the device to cool. Inspect before continuing.
After every session
Allow the device to cool before handling. Remove the cooling unit. Remove the dosing capsule or empty the filling chamber. Remove AVB completely — do not leave material in the chamber. Use a dry cotton bud to clear the filling chamber interior — work around the screen seat and inner rim to remove any residual particulate the tool did not collect. Replace the cotton bud if it becomes loaded with material before the chamber is clear. Wipe the exterior with a dry lint-free cloth. Store the device in a clean, dry environment.
Scheduled maintenance
Full strip-down cleaning at the frequency documented in Module 2, scaled to use intensity. Light use: every 7 days. Moderate use: every 3–4 days. Heavy use: every 1–2 days. Full protocol as documented in Module 2.
